GUEST  SPEAKER

Rtn. Daniel Elber from the R C of Bali Ubud was the Guest Speaker on 16 September.

Rtn. Daniel returned to our Club to give the members an UPDATE regarding his Club's FANTASTIC Project called " The Future for Children Foundation's - The Muntigunung Water Project ."

He started his talk by outlining the REASON for this Project.  Muntigunung, Karangasem is the driest area in Bali.  It's situated between Tulamben and Tejakula, on the northeast side of the island and on the slopes of the mountains leading to Lake Batur. The rugged and mountainous area covers around 28 km2 at an altitude between 200 and 900 meters above sea level. Approximately 5,500 people live in poor conditions in 35 different villages. There are NO rivers, NO springs, poor / dry soil and draught eight months of the year - preventing a sustainable development. The people have NO access to water, NO access to health services, NO income, NO education and NO information. In sum, they are outside the developmental mainstream. Begging in and around the tourist areas is the main source of survival. Their average income is US$ 10 per month. Most of women we see begging in the streets are from this area. This area, sadly, is considered the "poverty zone" of Bali.

Rtn. Daniel continued by outlining the Project's Strategic Priorities & Objectives:

  1. Water Supply - Provide 25 liters per person per day
  2. Capacity Building / Income - Increase Income by a factor of 4
  3. Education of Children - Provide Adequate Education for all Children

He then carefully explained the "Guiding Principles" behind the project:

  1. Improve the value of existing products
  2. Introduce new and simple activities
  3. Employ people to minimize their risk
  4. Pay adequate daily remuneration
  5. Test activities with small pilot projects
  6. Invest in capacity building to create high-quality products
  7. Take over marketing/promotion and sales
  8. Hand over business when there is a sustainable profit

Following this, Rtn. Daniel took a few minutes and talked about the Project's Income Generating Activities:

  • Trekking
  • Cashew Production
  • Rosella Production
  • Palm Sugar Production
  • Jatropha Plantation (Oil & Soap)
  • Hat & Basket Production
He finished his very well-received talk by discussing the Project's FUTURE Intentions:
  • Water Supply - 4 Villages
  • Livelihood Development - Wayang Kulit
  • Development Center - SIPIN Tests
  • Product Development (Rosella/Cashew)
  • Production Increase (Cashew/Hats)
  • New Products (Jewelery - Lawa/Coral/Gourds)
  • Further Develop Customer Base
For MORE about this truly exciting, sustainable, and worthwhile Project, please see the TWO attached PDF files.
