| GUEST SPEAKER |
P Patricia and IPP Urs were the "Special" Guest Speakers last week. They showed a very informative Slide Show presentation about the 100th RI Convention held in Birmingham, UK . They started their brief talk by saying they had NEVER EVER SEEN so many Rotarians in one place - over 19,000 individuals attended the four-day experience. For the program details, pls go to the following link:
http://www. rotaryconvention2009.com/ programme.html
One of the main "meeting places" was the House of Friendship where Rotarians mixed and shared info about their Club/District Projects. Many Clubs from around the world even took the time/energy to display their project involvement. IPP Urs said he was especially impressed with the two types of Fellowship Global Networking Groups: Rotary Fellowships and Rotarian Action Groups. IPP Urs observed soooooooo many different GROUPS: from wine-tasting to camping/skiing/stamp collecting, but all based on the Rotary Principals. Maybe something to consider here in Bali ....... For further details about this program, pls go to the following link:
http://www.rotary.org/en/ ServiceAndFellowship/ Fellowship/GlobalNetworkingGro ups/Pages/ridefault.aspx
The Convention Theme was 'EAST MEETS WEST,' because the 08-09 RI President, Dong Kurn Lee, was from Korea. To celebrate this "FIRST" for RI, there was a Tae Kwon Do exhibition during the opening ceremony. Also, a group of very young singers, "The Little Angles," displayed a very international flavor of Rotary during their performance. And a HUGH surprise for the attendees was a speech by the UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon.
Other highlights were speeches by Desmond Tutu , archbishop emeritus and Nobel Prize laureate, Jane Goodall, PhD, DBE, Founder, Jane Goodall Institute for Wildlife Research, Education and Conservation, and United Nations Messenger of Peace, and Mia Farrow , United Nations Goodwill Ambassador,

And on the FUN side of the Convention, there were a number of well-known European entertainers along with Helen Kuan a famous opera singer from Korea.
After the Convention finished, both P Patricia and IPP Urs needed some "Tourist" time. While visiting the sites in Birmingham, IPP Urs discovered that it has more canals than Venice. After seeing the LIGHTS of the BIG City he and his family headed to Stratford-on-Avon, William Shakespeare's birthplace.
In concluding their talk, both P Patricia and IPP Urs said that each of the FOUR days were PACKED FULL of EXCELLENT seminars/symposiums speakers/events/entertainment. Completed exhausted when they left ....... but energized for the NEW Rotary year ahead ......
Next year's Convention will be Montreal, Quebec, Canada followed by New Orleans, LA, USA and then Bangkok. P Patricia said she was already planning her trip to New Orleans and recommended that
ALL our members consider attending an RI Convention at least once in their ROTARY LIFE .........

| SEPTEMBER - NEW GENERATION MONTH |
September 2009
My fellow Rotarians:
Lord Byron wrote, "The days of our youth are the days of our glory." For me, that is the line that springs to mind whenever Rotary's youth programs are mentioned. In Rotary, September is New Generations Month - a time to focus our attention on our programs for youth and the role they play in shaping the Rotarians of tomorrow.
Our youth programs - Interact, Rotaract, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, and Rotary Youth Exchange - are some of the most important programs of Rotary. I say this because of the unparalleled potential they have to influence young minds and souls toward peace, goodwill, and harmony. That potential is the greatest in youth because the experiences of our early years never leave us; they shape who we later become. In the words often attributed to St. Francis Xavier, "Give me a boy until he is seven, and I will give you the man." For myself, I would give it a bit longer than that - but there is no doubt that the experiences of our youth have a greater formative power, and a greater ability to shape character, than any we may have in our adulthood.
When a teenager from the United States has the chance to travel to India to participate in a National Immunization Day, or when a student from Brazil spends a year studying in Japan, that person will be forever changed. These young people will have formed connections and affections that will endure. They will never think about their own country, or the world, in the same way again. Their perspective, their priorities, and their values will have been permanently shaped by that experience in a way that no later experiences will have the power to do. Your hard work ensures that these experiences continue to be possible - that these programs continue to be available, to be well run, and to earn the trust of the participants and their families.
The impressions of youth are strong, and they are lasting. There is never a second chance at them. We may grow and change as we get older, and we are surely changed by all of our experiences. But there is never another chance to build who we are. That happens only once: in our youth.
The days of our youth truly are the days of our glory - but through Rotary's youth programs, those days become the glory of all of Rotary.
John Kenny
President, Rotary International
