ANNOUNCEMENTS
* Apologies from Rtns. Cathryn, Judy, AG Kamal, PP Sarita, Ralph, Dr. Patrick, Helen, Agnes, & Alex.

"Please remember to RSVP each week.  It helps the Hotel prepare the correct number of Lunches !!"

* A Special THANKS to the following members for inviting some Guests to our meeting last week:

President Anita for inviting Paola Cannucciari.
Treasurer Peter for inviting Chris Sperdoto.
Rtn. Howard for inviting Sandra Roy.
* President Anita:

- welcomed all Members, Visiting Rotarians and Guests with a special welcome to Guest Speaker, Paola Cannucciari from Eco-Bali. She welcomed back Rtn. Howard and his wife, Sandra and also warmly welcomed Rtn. Bill Holland from NZ.
- explained that Treasurer Peter had been working on the design of a Cleft Palate Donation Voucher, which has now been beautifully printed showing a 'before and after' view of a cleft palate operation recipient.  She invited members to take some of these to be distributed amongst friends and acquaintances etc. who hopefully will be moved to donate money to this worthy cause.

NOTE :  These vouchers will be available at each weekly luncheon meeting.

- said she now has 10 sets of the simple health care booklets written by Jim & Robyn Nottingham available for anyone who needed them.   A set would be also given to the Interactors' Club as well as the Seminyak Library and also to a group who work with people in Papua New Guinea.
- asked if there were any objections to the removal of the hyphen in our Club's name RCB-S, as the removal had been requested by RI to conform with other RCs across Bali. Agreement was unanimous.
- announced the arrival in Bali of 17 members from RC Milano on Friday night, when a dinner at Gado Gado Restaurant has been arranged by Rtn. Ralph.  He requests that members join him to welcome these visiting Rotarians.

President Anita presented Rtn. Howard with his PHF
and congratulated him on this momentous achievement.

* Rtn. Tricia gave details of an upcoming Yoga for Scoliosis Workshop to be held on 3 and 4th May with Carole Baillargeon at the Yoga Shala Centre in Kerobokan.

* PP Mark then talked about a little boy, Dhani, whose case had recently come to his attention.  Dhani had sustained 3rd degree burns in May last year, when the bike he and his father were travelling on was involved in a crash with a vehicle carrying bensin.  The treatment that followed was less than adequate, resulting in the father later losing a leg. PP Mark informed the Club that a well-known local plastic surgeon, Dr. Asmarajaya from Sanglah Hospital has offered to give his time free to operate on Dhani, whose face and hands, according to PP Mark, basically melted in the accident.  What Dhani needs now to better his quality of life is a series of unfortunately very painful skins grafts, which will involve a lot of time in hospital, and this is expensive.

PP Mark plans to travel to North Bali to the boy's home to check on the situation first hand and to take photos etc. which can then be viewed on his website and we await an update after this visit.  PP Mark is also trying to get help from other sources as initially, US$ 1,680 is needed for the first operation due in a few weeks time, but overall costs are likely to amount to over US$16,000.  PP Mark said our Club needs to do some serious fundraising for causes such as this and asked that anyone who would like to make a personal contribution should contact him directly. PE Urs reported that he has Rp. 1 million already collected at his hotel and Rtn. Howard said he would try to raise funds on his return to Australia soon.  Rtn. Trish suggested we check what funds we have left in our Emergency Fund. PP Mark finished his report saying that all those members who do not come up with a fund raising idea should be fined US$ 100!  Several members donated money and PP Mark thanked them for their swift response and generosity. (Rtn. Rosmarie - Rp. 1,000,000) !!!

PP Mark then spoke about the girl with breast cancer that he has been helping and was sorry to report that the cancer was found to be terminal and he can now only help to make her remaining days comfortable.
GUEST  SPEAKERS
P Anita introduced Guest Speaker Paola Cannucciari, from Eco-Bali Recycling, who would be speaking about "Sustainable Solutions for Water Management on the Island of Bali."

Paola thanked the Club for giving her the opportunity of speaking about ECO-BALI'S efforts to deal with responsible waste disposal on the Island of Bali

Born in Italy with a background in veterinary science, Paola is married to an Indonesian and has lived in Bali for 18 years and regards Indonesia as home.

Eco Bali founded in 2005 and is a small organization with 5 full time workers plus others with whom they collaborate.  Although they take a broad approach, Eco-Bali's major concerns are to
  • promote the collection and recycling of beverage cartons such as those used for milk, juices, tea, etc.
  • increase awareness and disseminate information on waste disposal, recycling and renewable resources among the community.
Paola went on to say that waste is such a huge problem, but she wanted to reflect on what they are doing and hoped that we could collaborate with programs that are already setup by Eco-Bali. Presently, they are working with hotels, homes and schools, and their aim is not only to deal efficiently with waste management, but in the process, create businesses for Balinese.  Working in collaboration with waste recovery centers, carton collection is facilitated by creating partnerships among collectors at various levels, including waste recovery centers and appropriate recycling facilities.  Waste recovery centers are important partners in a viable and efficient recycling system.  With the increase in use of beverage cartons in the hotel industry, sessions are held for hotel staff to encourage carton collection.  A very important component of the program focuses on environmental education in local schools, with emphasis on teaching proper waste disposal, instilling the 3R's of REDUCE, REUSE AND RECYCLE, and placing value on the use of renewable resources.  Some of these educational sessions are carried out in conjunction with sports activities to promote health and environmental awareness.

Paola concluded this vitally important presentation saying that our support and participation in this carton recycling program can help to:
  • promote carton recycling through responsible waste disposal
  • provide sustainable solutions to waste management
  • establish a viable economic value chain for recycling
  • create useful recycled paper products
  • minimize impact on our environment
